Everything about this engine is drawn to be colored in blocks. The extension ladder runs the whole length of the roof and carries on past the cab, and its side rails are joined by a long zigzag of cross bracing that repeats the same triangle over and over. Follow that zigzag with two alternating colors and the ladder becomes the strongest thing on the sheet. Below it, a bank of roller shutter compartments breaks the body into neat panels, each one with a small handle, so the side of the truck is effectively a row of ready made color fields. The cab has two windshield panes with a wiper on each, a wide slatted grille and four round lamps grouped in pairs. Both visible wheels are drawn with a hub, a circle of bolts and a deep tire wall. A single flame rises behind the front of the truck in clean outline, never filled in, and a heap of small rocks sits at the bottom left corner. Red is the obvious choice for the body, but those panel divisions give you room to push one or two of the shutters toward orange without the truck reading as the wrong vehicle.
