Ground level and slightly to the front is where you are standing, so the blade comes at you first and the rest of the machine stacks up behind it. Push arms run back from the blade to the body, a ribbed radiator sits at the nose already filled solid black, and the cab rises behind with its posts and glass. One large wheel and a length of track carry the weight, and a chain loops across the front of the tire. Broken rock covers the entire lower third of the sheet, drawn as dozens of separate chunks. Behind the machine a mound rises under a net pattern, and an arc of fine scrollwork with small stars spans the sky. Those rocks are the real project. There are more than a hundred of them, all closed shapes, and cycling three or four grays through the pile gives a convincing scree without any blending. Keeping the machine to one strong color against all that gray makes it stand out. The scrollwork overhead is delicate and best left faint. Between the rubble and the tracks this page takes a while, which is usually the point.
