Two machines in one, which is the fun of a backhoe loader and the reason this page works. A wide flat bucket sits on the ground at the front, arms folded back toward the cab, while behind the operator the digging arm swings up and over with its toothed bucket hanging at the end. The cab between them is mostly glass, drawn as a few large panes. Four tires carry deep tread blocks, and the rear pair are noticeably bigger than the front, which is worth pointing out to a child who has not looked closely at real ones. Low mounds of loose earth sit behind the machine and a few stray clods lie in front of it. Outlines are thick and the interior lines are few, so this fills quickly. Yellow is the obvious choice and most children reach for it, but the page has enough separate panels that a second color on the arms and a third on the bucket lifts it. Tire tread is a row of small repeating shapes and makes a good place to slow down. Nothing here is fiddly, so it suits four to eight year olds.
