A hot air balloon hangs in the upper half of this drawing, its envelope divided into eight tall panels that curve from the crown down to the mouth. Below it a square burner frame connects to a wicker basket, and the weave of the basket is drawn as a row of short vertical strokes. The land underneath rolls away in long soft ridges, split into fields by single curving lines that work like hedgerows. A row of round headed trees and two narrow conical ones stand along the middle distance, and tufts of grass run across the very front.
The eight panels are the gift here. They are identical, large and closed, so a child can alternate two colors around the envelope and get a convincing striped balloon with no skill required at all.
Keep the fields pale. If the ground goes dark the balloon stops floating and starts sitting on the horizon.
The Montgolfier brothers sent up the first passengers in 1783, and they were not people. A sheep, a duck and a rooster went first, to find out whether anything could survive at altitude before anyone risked a volunteer.
