A helicopter hovers across the top of this page with its main rotor stretched the full width and a small tail rotor turning at the back. Below it hangs a rescue swimmer on a winch cable, gripping the line with one hand, legs bent, dressed properly for the job in a flight suit, boots, a helmet and a harness strapped across the chest. The cable runs cleanly from his hands up to a fitting under the fuselage. The bottom quarter of the sheet is open water, drawn as long even rows of wavy lines.

The water is the restful part. Row after row of the same gentle wave, which is exactly the sort of thing a child will happily do for twenty minutes.

The helicopter breaks into a handful of big shapes: cabin, skids, tail boom, two windows. Nothing fiddly.

Keep the cable a single thin line. It is the only thing connecting the two halves of the picture and thickening it spoils the sense of height.

A rescue hoist lifts around 600 pounds and takes about a minute to run its full length. The crewman at the door controls the speed by hand, watching the person on the end rather than the dial.
