A hang glider crosses the top of this page in a shallow turn, seen from behind and slightly above. The wing is a wide delta with a keel running down the middle and a crossbar spanning it, and a triangular control frame hangs below the leading edge. Slung from that is a smooth teardrop harness pod that tapers to a point at the back, fully enclosed, so no part of the pilot is visible. Beneath the glider the land rises into a range of sharp peaks, each one scored with ridge lines and gullies that run all the way down into the valleys.

The mountains carry most of the work. Those gully lines divide each face into long narrow panels, which is exactly the sort of repetitive structure that rewards shading from light at the ridge to dark in the shadow.

Leave the wing itself bright and simple. A single bold color on the sail against muted rock is what gives the page its height.

The flexible wing shape came out of NASA. Francis Rogallo developed it in the 1950s as a steerable parachute for recovering spacecraft, and sport pilots adopted the design after the space program set it aside.
