Baby Mushrooms Growing In A Garden Bed

Six young mushrooms have come up together in the corner of a garden bed, and no two of them are the same size. The tallest one leans in from the left with a broad spotted cap, and the smallest sits low in the middle, barely taller than the leaves beside it. Four simple flowers rise on thin stems behind the group, each with five rounded petals and a small round center. Broad leaves lie flat around the base of the stalks, and a watering can stands quietly at the back on the right, its handle arching over the top. Everything rests on one gentle curve of earth with a wide stretch of clean paper above and below. That empty space is deliberate. It keeps the page uncrowded for small hands and leaves room for a child to add a sun, a bee or a garden fence of their own. The mushroom caps carry only a few large dots each, so they fill in fast with crayons. If you want the group to read as one little family, use the same tone on every cap and change only the strength, going darkest on the tallest and palest on the smallest.
