A macaw holds the right side of this page. It perches upright with its hooked beak closed and one round eye showing, its wing folded into a run of long overlapping feathers, and a tail of three straight quills dropping well below the branch. Lower and to its left a much smaller bird grips a thin jointed stem, wings held up and back, no bigger than the macaw's head. The foliage comes in from the corners rather than filling the page: broad ribbed leaves hang down from the top left and top right, a spray of narrow blades fans out at the lower left, and a cluster of small flowers with rounded leaves builds up beneath the macaw.

That leaves a wide gap of white down the middle of the sheet. It is not a fault in the drawing, it is sky showing through the canopy, and how you treat it decides the page.

Leaving it bare keeps the tropical brightness. Laying one pale wash across it pushes the leaves forward and makes the macaw pop. What does not work is filling it with detail, which closes the canopy over and loses both birds.
