A stag stands in the middle of a clearing facing out at you, head up, ears turned forward, antlers branching high above him into five or six points on each side. His coat is marked with short scattered strokes along the flank and a paler bib at the throat. Two heavy tree trunks frame the scene, one at each edge, their bark drawn in long broken lines, and thin branches carrying small leaves reach across the top of the page. Behind him, much paler, stand rows of narrow conifers and low undergrowth. Big open flowers sit in all four corners, and a few soft circles float in the air like light through the canopy.
Those background trees are drawn deliberately light. Keeping them pale is what creates the depth; filling them as strongly as the stag collapses the whole glade flat.
The antlers are the one place to take real care, since they read as a single tangle unless you follow each branch.
A stag grows and sheds a full set of antlers every year. In spring they regrow at up to an inch a day, which is the fastest tissue growth of any mammal.
