Two loaded kayaks rest on a gravel river bar, camping gear strapped to their decks. A tent is pitched behind them, the fast river visible beyond with white water in the middle distance, rocky canyon walls rising on both sides. This is the most geographically dramatic sheet in the set, and the contrast between the warm rock walls and the cool rushing river is the whole color challenge. The canyon walls reward layered warm ochres, tans and russets, with darker values pushed into the crevices and shadowed faces. The river is the opposite: cool blue-green, with horizontal strokes for the flat water near the bank and rougher, broken strokes for the white water further out. The gravel bar beneath the kayaks takes a warm pale tan, each pebble suggested with a few well-placed marks rather than laboriously filled. The kayaks themselves are the brightest objects on the page: classic kayak colors like vivid red, orange, yellow or blue stand out sharply against rock and water alike. The gear strapped to the decks adds small details in neutral colors. This is a sheet for experienced colorists and rewards patience.
