A hiking trail winds back through a pine forest, narrowing toward the distance. A deer stands between trunks on one side of the trail, a squirrel sits on a branch above, and a chipmunk perches on a trailside rock. Trail markers are nailed to a trunk, and wildflowers crowd the path edges. This sheet has more going on than any other in the set, and the key is to work from the back forward. The farthest part of the trail should be the palest: almost white paper for the path itself, cool and faint for the distant trees. The middle distance gets more contrast, and the foreground gets the strongest darks and the most saturated color. The deer benefits from a warm tawny brown on the flanks with a paler cream on the belly; keep the eyes light and careful. The squirrel is smaller but equally precise: a rusty red-brown body, a pale belly, a big arched tail. The chipmunk on the rock takes warm brown with darker stripes. The wildflowers at the path edges are a chance to scatter color freely: yellows, purples, pinks.
