A wizard kneels over two huge open books, the smaller one propped on top of the larger, and both are so heavily decorated that the pages look carved rather than written. Panels of scrollwork, knotwork and small framed emblems fill every visible surface, and the thick block of pages beneath is drawn as dozens of fine parallel edges. Around him the room is full of apparatus: a domed glass lamp on the left, a lantern and a jeweled casket on the right, a hanging censer above, and a large mandala floating in the upper left corner. The air behind is filled with loose curling flourishes and scattered symbols. His robe falls in long heavy folds and his beard is drawn strand by strand. Be aware that no apprentice appears anywhere in the picture despite the title, so this is a portrait of one scholar alone. It is one of the densest sheets here and rewards a limited palette. Two or three colors used across the books, the robe and the ornament will hold it together.
