A phoenix hangs in the middle of this page with both wings extended to their absolute limit, and the pose is almost perfectly symmetrical, which gives the sheet a heraldic feel. Each wing is built in three clear layers: small rounded coverts close to the body, a middle row of medium blades, and a fan of long pointed primaries that curve up and outward to the top corners of the paper. Count them and you get around twenty feathers per wing, each one closed and ready for its own color. The body is smooth and unmarked apart from a scalloped breast, the head is small with a short crest and a hooked beak, and the tail below splits into four long flame shaped plumes with the claws gripping the air between them. Nothing is drawn behind it. The symmetry makes this an ideal page for a mirrored color scheme: work the left wing and then repeat it exactly on the right, feather for feather, and the finished sheet looks far more deliberate than the effort it takes.
