A phoenix rises out of a heap of rubble with both wings opened to their fullest, and the rubble is the most unusual element. Rather than soft ash, the artist has drawn about twenty large angular shards, each one faceted like a broken crystal with clean straight edges, piled across the bottom of the sheet. Flames curl up between them in long tapering tongues that merge into the bird's tail, so the creature appears to grow directly out of the pile. Its wings are enormous, each built from four layers of feathers running from small scallops at the shoulder to long spear points at the tip, and its breast is covered in neat overlapping rows. Small five petal blossoms and tiny sparks float through the open sky around it, and light scrollwork marks each corner. The shards are the opportunity here. Give each facet of a single crystal a slightly different tone and the whole heap will look like glass catching firelight, which is exactly the effect the drawing is reaching for.
