The fairy stands on the right of this page in profile, one arm reaching out across the empty middle with her palm turned up and open. She is looking straight at the firefly, and the gap of white paper between her fingertips and the insect is what the drawing is built around. Her wings are two broad leaf shapes held up behind her shoulders, her skirt is cut into soft points at the hem, and her hair curls forward past her cheek. The firefly hovers in the upper left at a size that lets you see how it is made: two curved antennae, a small spotted head, a pair of rounded wings spread wide, and a banded abdomen divided into segments that can each take a different shade to suggest the light coming off it. The lower edge of the sheet carries a row of grass blades and one leafy sprig with paired leaves.
