The hedgehog runs to the right with both arms flung wide, and a dozen rings arc through the air around his head and shoulders in a great sweeping curve.
Every ring is a true annulus, an outer circle and an inner circle with a band between them. That construction is the entire reason this page is worth printing. A dozen flat discs would be a dozen circles to fill in and nothing more. A dozen open bands can be worked as metal, with the band gold and the hole left as paper, and because they sit at slightly different sizes along the arc the row reads as receding into the distance.
The arc is also the composition. It carries the eye in a curve from the lower left up over his head and down the right side, which is a more interesting path than a straight line would give, and it frames the figure without touching it.
His arms are stretched straight out to either side, which keeps the torso and both arms as clear separate shapes with nothing crossing.
The ground is two plain strokes behind his heels. Everything else on the sheet is figure and rings.
