A heeler puppy walks the length of a fallen log with her tail up, concentrating, with leafy branches crowding in from both sides of the page.

The log runs corner to corner and the cut end faces the reader, showing its growth rings as a set of concentric ovals. That little target is the most satisfying thing on the sheet to color, and it is there because a log drawn as a plain cylinder is just a tube.

The bark is suggested with long grooves running the length of the log rather than an all over texture. The grooves divide the barrel into strips that can take slightly different browns, which is how bark actually reads, and it takes a fraction of the effort of stippling.

The foliage at both edges is drawn as sprays of separate leaves, each one a closed shape with a center vein and white space around it. Leaf texture is the usual trap here: drawn accurately it becomes a hundred hairline slivers. These are simplified until each leaf is a shape you could put a crayon tip inside.

The puppy walks with her legs clearly apart, so nothing is tucked behind her body.
