The little white cat stands at a counter in an apron with a wooden spoon in one paw and a bowl of cupcakes in front of her, two more trays of them laid out along the counter.
The cupcakes are the point of the page. There are nine of them in all, and each has a fluted paper case drawn with vertical pleats and a tall swirl of frosting built from looping coils. That is a lot of repeated detail, and it holds a child's attention far longer than one elaborate object would. Nine near identical cakes also means nine chances to try a different combination, and the counter ends up looking like a real bakery window.
The pleated cases are the best part. Each pleat is a narrow closed strip, so a child who wants a striped paper case can have one simply by alternating down the row.
The mixing bowl is a wide curve with a rim band and the cakes sitting in it, left otherwise plain.
The apron is blank apart from a bib panel and a pocket line. A big empty front in the middle of a busy page is a deliberate rest, and plenty of children put their own pattern there.
