The little white cat stands in a striped cone party hat beside a two tier cake with candles, and a string of bunting runs across the top of the page above them.
The bunting solves a problem rather than decorating. The top strip of a portrait page is usually dead space, left white because nothing belongs up there. A row of triangular flags fills it with small identical shapes that suit a repeating two or three tone pattern, and the drape of the line keeps the eye moving across the page rather than out of it.
The cake is two tiers, each with a wavy piped band running round it, standing on a plain round board. Four candles rise from the two levels, every one a separate taper with its own flame outline rather than a shared flame shape.
The party hat has diagonal stripes already drawn on it, six or so bands, which makes it the one small patterned object balancing the bunting above.
The cat stands to one side of the cake rather than behind it, so neither shape interrupts the other and both outlines stay complete.
