A heeler puppy sits in a back garden with a ball held against her chest, ears straight up, grinning wide enough to show her tongue. A picket fence with pointed palings runs the full width behind her, with a round bush showing above it at each side and tufts of grass scattered across the ground.
The ball is one clean circle with no panel lines cutting across it. That is deliberate. A ball sliced into segments forces a child to decide which segment gets which shade before any of the fun starts, and a plain circle lets a four year old put one bold tone down and feel finished.
Her markings are outlined rather than filled. The chest, the patch over her back and the tip of her tail are each a closed shape of their own, so two tones of the same blue will read as one animal rather than as a patchwork. Leaving the chest pale and taking the back a step darker is the quickest way to make her look rounded.
The fence is the other half of the page. Each paling is a tall separate strip, wide enough to take a marker without bleeding into its neighbor, and there are enough of them to make an alternating pattern worth trying.
