A heeler puppy sits on a checked blanket under a tree with a wicker basket beside her and two laden plates in front.
The blanket is the engine of this page. It is drawn as a proper grid in perspective, wider at the front and narrower at the back, with a fringed edge all the way round. A child who alternates two tones across the squares gets a real tablecloth, and the perspective means the finished blanket lies flat on the ground instead of standing up like a wall. That is a lot of value from a grid of straight lines.
The basket is woven as a coarse lattice with a plaited handle arching over it. Coarse enough to color, fine enough to read as wicker, which is the balance most printed baskets get wrong in one direction or the other.
The two plates are left simple, with the food on them drawn as plain rounded shapes rather than identifiable items. That is deliberate: a child decides what the picnic is.
The tree behind has a thick trunk with bark lines and a billowing canopy of lobed clumps, giving a second large area to work after the blanket.
