The string is what makes this page work. It runs on a long diagonal from the puppy all the way to the kite, splitting the sheet into two big open fields, and children almost always treat them as sky and ground without being told. Two broad washes and the page already looks finished, which is a good feeling to hand someone early.

The kite is quartered by its two cross spars into four clean panels. Four is the sweet spot. Two is dull and eight turns into fiddly work at the size a kite sits on a page. Alternating warm and cool across the quarters makes it look like it is spinning even though nothing moves.

The grass runs along the bottom third as individual blades fanning up rather than one solid band, so there is somewhere to vary the green instead of a single flat shape.

The puppy is drawn mid stride with real daylight between her legs, so no limb is trapped in a sliver too narrow to color.
