Two heeler puppies, a taller one and a smaller one, walk together across a lawn in front of a house. The house has a window at each side and a gate at the far right, with round bushes along its wall, and the whole foreground is thick with grass.
Two characters on one sheet is a different kind of page from one character. What makes it work here is that the two dogs are clearly distinguished by size rather than tangled together, so a child reading the page knows immediately that there are two animals and roughly where one ends.
That also makes the obvious exercise possible. Give the two dogs different tones and the page teaches, without a word, that the same shape can be colored two ways. Most children do it without prompting once they notice they can.
The grass is the quiet pleasure here. It is drawn as dozens of separate tufts rather than a flat green band, getting looser and larger toward the bottom of the page, so the lower third can be worked slowly once the dogs are done.
The house behind is left as plain outlines, deliberately, so the two figures stay the subject.
