Tracks lead this page. A line of plain oval prints starts at the bottom edge, close to the viewer and widely spaced, then steps back through the snow in shortening strides until the pairs are small marks near the treeline. They set the route your eye takes. Two bare trunks stand at the left, their branches thin and forking and completely without leaves, and a slim third rises behind them. The rest of the stand is firs, each drawn with its boughs sweeping down and a rounded ridge of snow sitting along the top of every one. Snow gathers in low mounds at the foot of the trunks, and a few stiff blades of grass push up through it at the front corners and midway along the right.
Most of this sheet is deliberately empty, because most of it is snow.
That makes it the easiest page in this set and also the one that rewards restraint. A faint blue in the shadowed hollows and under the boughs, with the sunlit snow left as bare paper, will read as winter far better than covering the white. Save your strong color for the tracks and the grass.
