Depth on this sheet is handled by weight of ink rather than by perspective. The firs along the bottom third are filled with dense black strokes and read as near silhouettes. The rank behind them is drawn lighter. The rank behind that is lighter again, until the furthest trees are barely more than a suggestion of pale gray tips. Above and beyond, three mountain ridges overlap in clean outline, with long contour lines following each slope and a dusting of snow indicated near the tops. A plain circle sits low on the left for the sun, part of it hidden behind the nearest ridge, and one thin cloud line stretches across the sky to the right. Small leafy sprigs poke up along the very bottom.
Understand what you are getting before you start. Those foreground firs are already close to solid, so there is not much paper left inside them to fill.
The mountains are where this page opens up. Their contour lines divide each slope into long bands, and running a gradient across them, warm at the sun and cool at the far edge, is what makes the scene work.
