Winter has caught this waterfall mid-pour. Thick columns of ice hang from the lip of the rock, icicles fringe the ledges, and a narrow channel of water still runs down the center where the current never quite stopped. Snow caps the boulders at the base. The outlines are clean and widely spaced, with very little background clutter, which makes this a good page for children around four to eight who are still building the hand control to stay inside a line.
The fun of coloring ice is that it is not really white. Let your child use pale blue, lilac and the faintest gray, and leave patches of bare paper for the brightest highlights. Wax crayons work nicely because the waxy sheen reads as frost. If you have a white gel pen, adding a few streaks over the finished ice makes it look wet.
Worth knowing while you color: a waterfall freezes from the edges inward. Slower water at the margins locks up first and builds outward, so a curtain of ice often forms around a core that is still flowing. Ice climbers use exactly these frozen columns as routes.
