Six redwood trunks rise off the bottom edge and run past the top of this page, each one so wide that only part of it fits. Long vertical grooves split the bark into ribbons, and short flicks across those grooves break them up further. High in the middle, above the point where the trunks start to crowd together, a plain circle stands for the sun. Straight rays spread out from it in pale lines that fall across the bark on their way down. Behind everything, a second stand of thinner trees is drawn in light outline so it reads as distance. The floor at the bottom holds a short fallen log, a few flat stones, and low clumps of small flowers in each corner.
The bark is where the time goes. Those ribbons run the full height of the sheet, so pick a direction and work down one trunk at a time rather than jumping around.
Leave the rays alone, or lay the palest wash you have over them. They cross in front of the trunks, so anything strong will fight the bark underneath. Two browns and one warm gold will carry the whole page.
