Four roses sit in this bouquet, each one drawn as a nested spiral that coils in to a tight center. Tucked between them are four plain hearts on their own stems, cut flat like paper rather than shaped like blooms. Leafy sprigs fan out to either side, and the whole bundle is cinched at the bottom with a fat bow whose two tails trail down past the cut stem ends. There is no vase and no table, only the bouquet itself on white paper.
The spirals are the only part that asks for a steady hand. Everything else, the hearts, the leaves, the ribbon, is a big clean shape a young child can fill without worrying.
A bouquet is a good place to break the rule that roses must be red. Give each of the four a different shade and keep all the leaves one green, and the arrangement reads as deliberate instead of accidental. The ribbon is the one thing worth leaving pale, since it has to stand apart from the stems crossing behind it.
Around 250 million roses are grown each year for the single week before February 14. Most of them travel from Colombia and Ecuador, where the high altitude slows the buds down and gives them longer stems.
