A dozen roses are arranged into a heart on this page, each one opening at a different angle so no two repeat, with broad veined leaves packed into every gap between them. The ring is closed at the top with a small spray and comes to a point at the bottom. Around it runs a ruled double border, and from each corner a long arrow and a curl of foliage reach in toward the middle. The space inside the heart is not empty either: very pale scrollwork traces another heart within the first.
That pale inner scroll is drawn deliberately light and will print faint. Leave it alone and it reads as a watermark behind the wreath; fill it and it competes.
There is a great deal of work in here. The rose centers alone are a long sitting, and the leaf veins reward a sharp pencil over anything blunt.
The heart symbol has never looked much like the organ. It turns up in European manuscripts from around the 1250s, upside down at first, and only settled into the point down shape we draw now during the following century.
