A heart shaped box sits open in the middle of a very empty page, with its lid propped up behind so you can see the whole lip of it. Inside, the chocolates are packed tight: nine or ten small hearts of their own, a sweet in a twist wrapper with the ends pinched out like a bow tie, and one round truffle scored with a crosshatch. The box itself is plain, which leaves the clutter where it belongs, in the middle.
The scale here suits small hands badly and careful hands well. Those individual chocolates are little, so this is a better fit for an older child or an adult with a fine tip than for a toddler with a crayon.
A trick worth trying: keep the box and lid in one family of color and make every chocolate inside a different shade. The contrast does the work, and the heap stops reading as a single brown mass.
Richard Cadbury put the first heart shaped chocolate box on sale in 1868. He had a surplus of cocoa butter and a knack for decorative packaging, and the idea that the box should outlast the sweets was his from the start.
