Three children crowd around a deep oval tray, all three leaning in over the rim. Two heart shaped cookies sit side by side in the middle of it, thick enough that you can see the cut edge, and smaller heart outlines and dots are dotted around them on the tray surface. The boy on the left holds a thin icing tool pointed down at the nearest cookie. The child in the middle, hair cut in a bob with a tail at the back, reaches in with both hands. The girl on the right grips a second tool and watches. All three wear bib aprons over long sleeves.
The tray is drawn deep, more like a tub than a baking sheet, which gives you a big curved band of blank surface at the front. That is the easiest place for a young child to start.
The two cookies are the obvious spot for your brightest color, since everything around them is soft.
Sugar cookies hold a sharp heart edge because the recipe skips most of the leavening. Less rise means less spread, which is why cut out dough and a cake recipe are not interchangeable.
