One eye, one very large eye, right in the middle of the face. That single eye is what makes a cyclops monster read as a monster instead of a bear, and it is also the part of this page worth slowing down for. A small dark pupil sits at the center of a wide open iris, and that ring of iris is the part worth working on. Build it up from pale at the middle to deeper at the rim and the whole face looks alive. The belly carries wide open bands running across it. Alternate two tones across those bands and the round body suddenly has volume, because stripes bend around a curved surface and your eye reads the bend as depth. Keep the bands going in the same direction all the way round. Two short horns sit on top of the head and the grin shows a row of blunt square teeth, each one outlined so you can leave them white. Nothing here is scary. The proportions are all round, which is the cue that tells a young colorer this monster is friendly. Download the PDF free and start with the eye.
