Something has just hatched. The egg is cracked round the middle in a zigzag and the little monster has pushed its head and both horns up through the opening, grinning like it is rather pleased with itself. Children color a page properly when something is happening on it, and that is what this one has. The lower half of the shell is left plain and smooth with nothing inside it. That is the biggest clear area on the sheet and it is where a pattern belongs: spots, zigzags, a band of color round the base. Keep the shell pale and the monster darker, or the other way round, so the two shapes stay separate where they meet. The zigzag crack line is the detail that sells the whole idea, so leave it white and unpainted. A crack you color over stops reading as a crack. The monster face is built from big simple shapes with two square teeth in a wide grin, so it suits younger hands. This sheet sits nicely next to our dragon coloring pages, which include a hatching dragon egg of their own. Download the free PDF.
