A monster face drawn big, close up, filling the sheet. Portrait sheets like this one are the easiest place to learn shading, because there is one subject, it is large, and every feature has room. Start with the eyes. Both pupils are outlines rather than filled circles, so you can build them up in layers: a pale ring for the iris, a deeper tone toward the edge, and a white dot left alone for the catchlight. The shaggy brows above them are rows of short open strokes. Color those strokes in the direction they point and the brow keeps its texture. Cut across them and it turns into a smudge. The grin runs the width of the face on two rows of blunt square teeth, each one outlined. Leave the teeth white or near white and put your darkest tone in the gaps between them. That single choice does more for a toothy grin than anything else on the page. Short scallop strokes of fur edge the outside of the head, and two short horns sit at the top. The face is wide and round, so it lands closer to funny than frightening. Print the free PDF on US Letter paper.
