Twelve is the second of the two numbers past ten that a child cannot reason their way to, and after this one the teens start behaving. Thirteen sounds like three, fourteen sounds like four, and the pattern holds all the way to nineteen. So twelve is worth treating as the last of the awkward pair rather than the first of a long list, because that framing is a good deal more encouraging. The numeral is drawn very large as two bubble outlines, a 1 and a 2, and it helps to name them separately while your child traces them, then say the whole number once at the end. A cheerful frog sits beside the number with two big round eyes and wide webbed feet, drawn with thick outlines and plenty of blank space. If your child is ready for more, count to twelve out loud together while they colour, then try it backwards. Download the free PDF and print it on US Letter paper.
