A boy has settled into the roots of a broad tree with an open book on his knees, and his dog sits directly across from him, ears up, as though it is following the story. The trunk takes up the left half of the sheet and is drawn with long vertical bark lines, so it gives you a big area to work on before you reach any small detail. Leafy branches and trailing vines fill the top, butterflies drift through the middle, and the ground is scattered with little flowers and fallen petals. Bark is more interesting than it looks. Lay down a light brown across the whole trunk, then press harder along the grooves between the bark lines and the tree will look round instead of flat. The leaves overhead can shift from yellow green at the tips to deeper green near the branches. Give the dog a warm tan and leave the book pages white so they stay the brightest spot on the page. The scattered petals on the ground only need a quick touch each, so save them for when your hand is tired.
