Eleven is the first number past ten and the hardest one in the whole set to explain, because the word gives a child nothing to work with. Two sounds nothing like eleven. Thirteen at least hides a three in it, and so does every teen number after it, but eleven hides nothing at all, which is why children who count confidently to ten so often stall on the very next number. This sheet takes the pressure off by making it something to look at and colour rather than something to work out. The number is drawn very large as two tall bubble outlines standing side by side, filling the whole page, so point at each digit in turn and say that both of them are a one. That is the fact worth landing, and it is a great deal easier to see on paper than it is to hear. The wide open middles suit a chunky crayon and leave very little chance of straying over an edge, which makes this a good sheet to hand a child who is still building control.
