Clean outlines and large shapes make this one of the easier sheets in the set. The fox sits facing you in a stand of birch, ears up and tufted, with its brush laid flat along the ground to one side like a cushion.
The only heavy black anywhere on the page is on the front legs, drawn as solid stockings from the knee down. Everything else stays open line: the trunks, marked with short dashes for bark, the low tufts of grass, a rounded rise behind the animal, and a couple of loose leaves near its feet. There is no shading and no fur hatching at all, just the silhouette and a few interior lines for the ruff and the muzzle.
With so little detail to lose, this one takes marker or crayon as happily as pencil, which is not true of most sheets in this hub.
The black legs are worth leaving black. They anchor the picture, and they happen to be accurate. A red fox wears dark stockings and dark backs to its ears, and at a distance across a field those two marks are the quickest way to be sure you are looking at a fox and not a coyote.
