Almost every square inch of this one has been worked. The fox sits in profile facing left with its ears up and its chin lifted, and the night around it is filled in completely: spirals, beaded chains, small daisies, and stars at four or five different sizes stacked over one another.

The biggest stars sit high on the page and are drawn as plain outlines with nothing inside them, which is a relief somewhere this busy. Down in the corners the pattern turns into long feathered flourishes and lilies. One shape cuts across all of it, and that is the tail, sweeping forward from behind the haunch and folding over itself along the bottom edge, ruled its whole length with long parallel strokes.

Choose the stars first. Coloring only those and leaving the rest of the background white gives you a night sky without a week of work, and the fox still sits clear of it. If you would rather fill the whole field, hold it to two close values so the animal stays the darkest thing on the page.

Foxes are busiest at dusk and after dark. A red fox has around twenty distinct calls, among them the harsh scream a vixen gives in winter that people hearing it usually attribute to something much larger.
