The fox is off the ground completely. All four feet have left the snowbank, the front pair folded under the chest and the back pair trailing, and the tail streams out behind in one long counterweight that runs almost the width of the page. Nothing touches the ground except the line of the bank itself.
The mouse has already noticed. It sits up on the slope below with both forepaws raised and its ears turned back toward the sound, and its tail curls away in a long spiral picked out with small beads. It reads calm rather than panicked, which leaves the outcome of the leap open.
Flowering vines fill the margins and keep the empty snow from going blank. A heavy cluster of blooms and leaves anchors the upper left, a thinner stem climbs the right edge in loose curls, and both lower corners carry sprays of their own. All of it is drawn in the same weight of line as the fox.
A fox hunting mice in winter is listening, not looking. It finds the animal under the snow by sound alone, then jumps almost straight up so it drops nose first through the crust. Keep that in mind as you color: the fox carries the full red, the lower legs and the ear tips stay dark, and the snow does best left white.
