The ears arrive before the animal does. They rise almost as tall as the fennec is long, each one veined with fine strokes running base to tip, and everything else in the drawing has been arranged to leave them room.
Behind the head sits a large ornamental disc, ring after ring of small patterned cells, laid in a lighter line so that it stays a backdrop instead of competing with the fox. Low dunes cross the page at shoulder height. Spiky desert grasses crowd both bottom corners with a single ribbed succulent among them, and a scrolled border carrying small dark leaf motifs closes the four edges.
The fennec faces you squarely, ruff fanned out at the chest, front toes spread. Its coat is hatched rather than outlined, so the body takes soft shading better than flat blocks.
A sandy palette is the honest one, since a fennec is pale cream over nearly all of itself with only the ear rims and tail tip going darker. Save your contrast for the disc behind, which will take anything. Those ears are not decoration. They are the largest of any wild dog relative to body size and they work as radiators, shedding heat through blood vessels close to the skin so the animal can hunt through a desert night.
