Winter coat is what this drawing is about. The fox sits square to you under a ruff so heavy that head and shoulders read as one soft triangle, and the fur is built from short hatched strokes laid in the direction it grows, dense at the chest and looser down the flanks.
The sky behind is not empty sky. It has been packed with curling vines, round berries, small open roses, loose spirals and scattered dots, worked right up to the border, so the animal reads as a pale shape cut out of a busy field. A plain circle at the upper left stands in for the moon, and it is the one large untouched area on the sheet. Snow banks close the bottom in long unbroken curves, with berry branches rising on either side.
Leave the fox nearly white and let the background carry the color. That contrast is already drawn in, and fighting it flattens the page. A pale blue in the snow shadows is enough to stop the animal disappearing altogether.
An arctic fox really does change coats twice a year, thin and brown through summer, deep and white through winter. The winter version insulates better than the fur of any other mammal, which is why the animal can sit out in the open like this.
