A dolphin cruises across the upper half of the page while a reef fills the bottom: rounded brain coral heads on the left, tall branching fans on the right, and a clear band of open water in between. Coral is drawn as smooth outlined shapes with white showing between them rather than as dense texture, so it stays colorable instead of turning into a thicket.
That band of empty water is the most useful thing on the sheet. Graded from a deep tone at the top down to almost nothing just above the coral, it creates depth that a flat fill never manages.
The reef is where you can be loud. Living coral runs through orange, magenta, yellow, and violet within the same few feet, so nothing you choose will look wrong, and a bright reef under a restrained gray dolphin is a strong contrast.
Bottlenose dolphins do hunt over reefs, working fish out of the structure and sometimes shielding their beaks with a torn off sponge. Ages eight and up.
