Every breath a dolphin takes is a decision. Breathing is not automatic the way it is for us, which is why a dolphin never falls fully asleep. It shuts down one half of its brain at a time and leaves the other half running to surface, breathe, and watch. A calf in its first weeks comes up far more often than its mother.

Two separate ripple systems give you a reason to use more than one blue. Try a greener tone inside the rings and a cooler one in the open water beyond them, with the crests left as bare paper.

Size difference does the storytelling, so keep both animals in one palette. Ages seven and up.
