A whole street on one sheet. Five narrow houses stand joined shoulder to shoulder with no gap between them, exactly the way row houses do, and every one of them has its own front. Along the top runs a deep cornice carried on a line of small brackets, repeated all the way across. Below that come two floors of sash windows, each divided into four panes and capped with its own lintel and sill, then a paneled front door under a transom, then a short stoop of steps leading down to a slab of sidewalk. The middle house is a little wider than its neighbors and its windows are correspondingly larger, which stops the row looking mechanical. One straight line closes the pavement at the bottom. Two approaches work here and they give completely different results. Give each house its own color and the street turns into the kind of painted terrace people travel to photograph. Keep all five in one shade and pick out only the doors, and the row reads as brick with the doors as the surprise. Either way there is a lot of page to cover, so this is a sheet for a long afternoon.
