A young rabbit sits upright in the middle of this page, facing you, drawn in the thick unhurried outlines used across our simple tier. Its ears stand straight up with a soft inner line running down each one. The eyes are large ovals with short lashes above them, the nose is a small rounded triangle, and three whiskers sweep out from either cheek. Both front paws are tucked together against the chest, and the back feet rest flat on the ground with three toe lines drawn on each.
Leafy branches reach in from the top left and top right, so the upper third of the sheet is busy while the middle stays open. Along the bottom, big fallen leaves overlap in a loose drift. Some are lobed like maple, others are pointed ovals, and a few tiny ones scatter across the gaps with a couple of acorns among them.
The open middle band is the reason this one works well for a young colorist. The leaves give an older child somewhere to try warm shades and a lot of variety, while the rabbit itself is only a handful of large shapes.
