A rabbit kneels at the waterline with both front paws pressed against a tall mound of wet sand, patting it into shape. The mound is still rough, with a peaked top and a couple of squared off blocks stacked at its base, so this is a castle at the early stage rather than a finished one with towers. Small pebbles are scattered through the sand around it and one larger smooth stone sits to the right.
Behind the builder, a bucket lies tipped on its side with a spade resting across it and a little pennant on a stick planted alongside. A flat run of horizontal lines marks calm water stretching to the edges of the page.
The drawing style is our simplest: thick single weight outlines, no shading and no texture anywhere. The largest area by far is the sand, which is worth thinking about before you start, since a very pale tone there will let the rabbit and the pail stand out. Older children can add wet and dry patches to break the space up.
