A tiger cub walks forward and to the left, one front paw lifted, head up and tail curving behind it. It is drawn young: the head is large for the body and the paws are oversized, which is how tiger cubs actually look.

The stripes are drawn as wide bands rather than thin lines, and most of them are outlines with the coat showing through. That is what makes the page workable. Tiger sheets often arrive with dozens of narrow stripes and no room to color between them; here there are large open areas of coat down the flank, across the shoulder and along both back legs.

The face is done with a light touch. One large eye, a small nose at the tip of the muzzle, four whisker lines and two rounded ears with an inner curve in each.

Orange with a cream belly is the scheme everyone reaches for and it is correct. A white tiger, coloring only the stripes and leaving the coat as paper, is faster and looks striking.

Whichever way you go, keep the stripes darker than the coat rather than the other way round, and do the coat first. Working the pale color around finished stripes is much harder than laying stripes over a finished coat.
