A baby owl sits square on a branch and looks straight out at you. It is almost perfectly round, with two little tufts on top of its head and a small triangular beak set between two very large eyes.

Those eyes are most of the drawing's character and they are already dark, so the decision they leave you is what to do with everything else. The body is one big open shape with nothing inside it at all. A folded wing sits against each side, each drawn with three long feather shapes along its lower edge, and two feet with three toes each grip the branch below.

The branch runs the full width of the page with a couple of small side twigs, and nothing has been drawn behind it. No moon, no night sky, no trees. An owl page usually arrives with all of that and it usually makes the sheet worse.

Because the body is so open it takes streaky, layered coloring well: work in short strokes following the curve of the belly and it reads as down rather than as flat paint. The wings look best a clear step darker than the body.

The tufts, the beak and the toes are the small shapes, and they tie together if you give all three the same color.
