A calf stands side on facing left, head turned slightly toward you, with a soft tuft of hair between its ears and a tail hanging down behind with a brush at the end.

The patches are the page. There are six or seven of them spread across the body, all large, all rounded and all completely empty inside. They are the classic dairy markings and they give the sheet its structure, because everything else on the animal is left open.

A few blades of grass run along the very bottom edge with plenty of white paper between them. That is the entire setting, which is deliberate. A drawn-in meadow would compete with the patches and there would be nowhere left for the eye to rest.

Black patches on a white coat is the expected scheme and it works because the patches are already separated. Brown patches give a Jersey calf and look just as correct. What does not work is coloring the coat and the patches in similar tones, because the markings then disappear and the drawing loses the thing it was built around.

The muzzle, the inner ears and the hooves are the three small shapes. Giving all three the same soft pink is a small decision that pulls the animal together.
